Singer/songwriter
Ego Ella May and producer
Mini-D, who connect to form the future-soul duo
MDMay, recently released their unique take on the neo-soul classic
"Come Close" as originally performed by rap star
Common and the legendary
Mary J. Blige. Where most artists would stick pretty close to the script when it comes to a track that's pretty much universally loved by hip hop and soul music fans alike, the forward thinking duo rework the song into something totally unique and beautifully executed. Over
Mini-D's subdued and seemingly sparse production touches,
Ego Ella May delivers a hauntingly graceful vocal performance that takes the song into a totally different sphere. And though the
MDMay version of
"Come Close" truly lives up the word "rework" in its title, the updated version still manages to remain true to the original's heartfelt spirit. Great introduction from a duo that we are sure to hear big things from in the near future.
And if you dig what you're hearing, make sure to pick up a copy of
Ego Ella May's most recent album,
Breathing Underwater, to hear even more amazing music from the young songstress.
