I just happened to come across this recently released Clear EP from Detroit's own Big Tone while checking up on the group Clear Soul Forces and I gotta say, this joint is live as hell! After listening to the first couple of tracks, I ended up buying the whole release because it's just that dope. From the start, Big Tone sets a soulful tone (no pun intended...well, maybe a little) with the laid back groover "Time is of the Essence". The track starts with a hilarious bit from comedian Paul Mooney then segues into some sharp verses from Tone as set against a really smooth 70's soul influenced beat. The energy built up by the strong opening track is maintained on the next track as Clear Soul Forces members L.A.Z and E-Fav connect with Big Tone for the jazzy throwback burner "Ya Gotta". The laid back but definitely live vibes continues throughout the 5 track EP and make for a dope hip hop set. Add this to your "must buy" list.
Also, if you dig what you're hearing, also check out Big Tone most recent release, the LAWDHAMMERCY album.
