Even though my taste in music has expanded over the years, soul music will always hold a special place in my heart. While many of today's R&B artists seem to be solely focused on the sleek "rhythms" of the genre and shy away from its grittier "blues" roots, there are still some artists out there who manage to balance the two traditions fairly evenly. On the track "7 Days" singer/songwriter Charli Madison creates a straight-no-chaser soul number that definitely shows modern influences from artists like Mary J Blige and Angie Stone.
But the songstress also seems to draw inspiration from bluesy soul music staples like Dorothy Moore and the great collective of singers on Malaco Records that defined contemporary blues in the late 70's and early 80's. A great voice that's definitely deserving of revisiting again and again.
